“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” Coco Chanel
Fashion, by its very definition, is constantly changing. Style, however, is something else completely. It’s a way we speak, act, or dress. Everyone can develop their own great personal style, simple by deciding what works for them.
I believe that finding your own style starts with understanding who you are and understanding the choices you make. When we think about how we present ourselves and how certain pieces fit into and enhance our life it makes it simple to create a style that best expresses who we are.
Every day offers a new series of choices that help define us as individuals. Some questions are so basic as whether to flatten your hair or wear it curly and loose, or to apply pink, clear, or red polish to your nails.
Ideally, the decisions you make should be based on who you are, how you see yourself, and how you want others to see you. It a combination of these little moment-by-moment, daily decisions that brings our style to life.
It’s great to study what’s out there, keep informed about what’s available, and think about what best “fit” your personality and shape. Take a look at all that’s out there, and even think about trying things you might not have first thought of.
It’s also fun to look to the past for inspiration. I’ve found it fascinating to read books about Chanel, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Audrey Hepburn, and think about how certain pieces and looks make sense today, even in this constantly changing world we live in.
Movies from the 1930s, 1940s, and even Impressionist paintings make me wonder and give me ideas about putting outfits and certain types of looks together. It’s such an individual thing, but once you find inspiration, you can think about how the ideas can be applied to your own life and then you will make great choices about what to buy and what to wear on a regular basis.
Finding a personal style is a never ending and exciting endeavor. Since change is a fact of life, your style- like mine- will have to be tweaked and adapted to stay strong and current and so it’s always true to the real you.
The more you understand yourself and think about how you are changing and growing, the more you can appreciate being able to express yourself with style and have fun with it.
Style can’t florish when you limit your own vision of yourself.
The ultimate and end result of style is that it should give you pleasure, help you express yourself, and make you feel good about who you are.
Expressing yourself in a creative way is, quite simply, fun!
