Heart and Silk:Building Dreams Through Art, Apparel & Passion
These two looks were inspired by these super cute, classy, and incredibly soft tee-shirts. Obviously I love the designs. What's not to love about a pink ice-cream cone and fancy packages tied up in bows? However, what I love even more is the amazing way this company called Heart and Silk began and the truly extraordinary designers that made these shirts extra special. The designers are homeless children. Let me explain.
In the summer of 2016 Mike and Ben wanted to "create to change." Two years ago they were creating apparel for college organizations to help pay for tuition. Getting involved with community was important to them, especially because they attended commuter colleges- New York City was their campus. They devoted their time to getting involved and improving their campus. This led Mike and Ben to combine a community service project with apparel and quickly became their passion as they focused on the devastating homelessness issue in NYC.
It's amazing to me the way Heart and Silk operates in such a well thought out and systematic way for such an important cause with the end result being so full of creative expression and positive personal relationships for so many people. Still, that's not even referring to how fabulous these tee shirts look and feel.
It's referring to the way that every week Mike and Ben run art workshops for children in partnering shelters. The artwork created is then used on the tee shirts and it doesn't stop there. Proceeds from the sales of the shirts are used to provide care packages for children in need. As you can see, there's so much more to love about these shirts than what you can see! I am really inspired, as an early childhood teacher in the inner city of Providence, to not just show support in this endeavor but to follow the example of Mike and Ben and do what I can in the classroom and make my students' learning experiences as engaging and productive as what I see going on at Heart and Silk. The positive and loving moments they create and the talent they nurture and motivate on a regular basis is what makes these shirts so much more than the highest quality super cute fashionable pieces they are.
Thank you so much for your time and attention. It is truly appreciated and I hope you found this post worthwhile.
